Delinquency and violence continue to be a primary issue for children and families. Research indicates that there is a well established relationship between crime and mental disorders, as well a, a relationship between child abuse and neglect and delinquency, criminality and violent criminal behavior. Abused children are 4.8 times more likely to be arrested as juveniles and 3.1 times more likely to be arrested for a violent crime.
The Nurturing Parent Program has been offered to families who have struggled with abuse and neglect, parenting challenging behaviors in their children, and/or who need some specific help with parenting since 2007.
The short term goals are to help parents learn and use nurturing behaviors instead of abusive ones. The long term goas is to reduce the rate of juvenile delinquence among high risk youth. The program serves to develop positive self-concept and self-esteem in all family members.
