The Buckeye Ranch’s Early Childhood Mental Health (ECMH) program provides prevention support, mental health tools, and educational resources for preschools and caretakers of children ages 0-5 to improve overall emotional well-being to ensure long-term academic success.
Kindergarten Readiness ToolkitPart of our Education-Based Mental Health Services, our Early Childhood Mental Health (ECMH) program is designed to both help youth ages 0-5 receive mental health support early to allow for healthy coping mechanism and behavioral pattern development, as well as support to parents in nurturing healthy social-emotional learning habits for their young children.
The program strives to set children and families up for success in their education journey early to ensure long-term success.
The Early Childhood Mental Health (ECMH) program came about from Education-Based Mental Health team recognizing a gap in our continuum of care for support for young children in the education setting.
We heard from our Elementary, Middle, and High Schools that our School-Based Mental Health program serves that their preschools and young children could use similar supports to catch behavioral and mental health challenges early, as well as coach parents on how to best support their children to ensure kindergarten readiness.
Third grade is when students make the leap from learning to read to reading to learn. Once a learning gap exists at this phase, kids almost never catch up. Having a solid foundation, healthy coping skills, and the tools to be set up with social-emotional learning support at ages 0-5 is crucial to reach this learning milestone, and many others, for youth in our community.
Research tells us that 83% of low-income students test below proficient in reading at the start of fourth grade. Much of this is because they are not equipped with the support they need to regulate and focus on their learning inside or outside the classroom.
