Frequently Asked Questions

foster care information

Looking for additional information about the foster care program at The Buckeye Ranch? See if we have the answers below.

What is my income requirement?

Foster parent requirements indicate the need to have sufficient income to meet your own needs without foster care reimbursements.

Do I have any say in the child or children who come into my care?

Yes, foster parents will be given all the information we receive about a child in need of placement. You choose which child will be placed in your home.

Do I have to be married?

No. We have both single and married foster parents. We have couples who live together but are not married. We welcome LGBTQ foster parents as well.

Why are children in foster care?

There are a number of reasons why a child might be placed in foster care, including physical abuse, sexual abuse, and neglect by their caregivers. While these situations are tragic, we believe that all people are able to learn and change, and the best place for a child to grow up is in his or her own home.

How old are children in foster care?

The children in need of foster care range in age from newborns up to the age of 18. In some cases, young adults up to age 21 can remain in foster care.

How many foster children does The Buckeye Ranch care for?

The Buckeye Ranch Foster Care Network cares for between 250-300 children on a daily basis.

How long are children in foster care?

The time a child is in care varies greatly. A child can be in care for a short time, such as a week or up to a few years. Each case is different.

How old do you have to be?

You must be at least 18 years old to be a foster parent.

How do foster parents get paid?

Foster parents get paid a daily rate called a per diem. This payment is made once a month. You also get reimbursed for various expenses you might have such as mileage. View foster parent benefits.

Do I pay for the child's clothing?

Yes. As part of the daily rate you are paid, you are expected to buy appropriate clothing for the foster child. We also offer ADDITIONAL clothing reimbursements. View foster parent benefits.

Do I pay the child's medical expenses?

No, the child will enter care with medical coverage. Sometimes coverage can be pending, but your assigned case managers will work individually with you.

How often does The Buckeye Ranch visit the child?

We visit with the child on a regular basis in your home and at school. Depending on the needs of the child, we are there more or less often.

Will I get transportation support?

While the foster parent is primarily responsible for transportation, we have a transportation department that is here to provide additional support to foster parents.  Transportation services are offered in all regions.
