Frequently Asked Questions About Our Programs & Resources

We work hard to provide all the information you might need to understand The Buckeye Ranch and how to utilize our services. See below for some of the questions we get most often.

How do I get my child involved in Ranch programs?

The first step in getting services for your child is to contact the Admissions and Engagement Department to complete a referral. A referral can be made by completing our online referral form, contacting us at (614) 384-7798 to complete a referral by phone, or having a paper copy mailed to you with a return envelope. Once we have received your completed referral form, you and your child will be scheduled for a 1-1.5 hour assessment with one of our Assessment Clinicians. At this appointment, you will review your child’s history and current issues. Based on the assessment, the Assessment Clinician will then recommend your child and family for the Buckeye Ranch program that will be most helpful to you.

What does The Buckeye Ranch do?

The Buckeye Ranch is a private, nonprofit organization with a comprehensive array of mental health treatment options for children, youth, and families. The Buckeye Ranch is committed to providing high-quality care utilizing the most up-to-date, scientific knowledge to address the challenges faced by the children, youth, and families we serve. We actively seek the most current research-based treatment approaches in our relentless commitment to providing the best possible care to children, youth, and families.

The Buckeye Ranch also takes a strengths-based approach with every child, youth, and family. We believe that these strengths can be accessed to help families reach their full potential, because families are fundamental in the lives of children and, therefore, central to the treatment we provide. Our families are struggling to overcome serious issues including abuse, neglect, mental illness, suicidal tendencies, addictions, and other life-debilitating concerns. Because of this, The Buckeye Ranch is much more than a place. It’s a comprehensive network of skilled professionals, working as a team to provide children and their families with the treatment, guidance, and support they need to restore hope and move on to a better place.

The Buckeye Ranch serves thousands of children, youth, and families from Franklin and other counties every day at six locations throughout Ohio.

How soon can we get help?

Some programs offer immediate access to families in need. However, for some programs, the need is so great that The Buckeye Ranch is forced to place potential families on a waiting list. Our Admissions and Engagemnt staff can work with you to try to provide the most appropriate level of care as soon as possible. For the latest information on any program you are interested in accessing, contact The Buckeye Ranch’s Admissions and Engagement Department at (614) 384-7798 or toll-free at (800) 859-5665, option 1 to speak with a Engagement Specialist.

What is the cost of The Buckeye Ranch services?

Fees vary depending on the type of care needed. Some service costs are offset by Medicaid or the client’s local Alcohol, Drug, and Mental Health Board. For specific information on fees or funding options, contact The Buckeye Ranch’s Admissions and Engagement Department at (614) 384-7798 or toll-free at (800) 859-5665, option 1.

Can I self-refer my child for residential treatment?

No. Most referrals for residential treatment come through a county agency or through the court system. If you are interested in other services that The Buckeye Ranch offers, such as outpatient or community-based counseling, you are welcome to self-refer and can do so through our website referral form or via phone. If you have any questions about this process, please contact us at (614) 384-7798 or online.

Do I need a doctor to make a referral to get counseling for my child?

For the most common services such as outpatient and community-based counseling, a referral from a doctor or other professional is not needed. Family members, parents, and caregivers are welcome to complete the referral for these services themselves. There are certain Buckeye Ranch services that will require a referral to come from a professional or agency. Please contact the Admissions and Engagement Department at (614) 384-7798 with any questions about this process.

I believe my child needs medication for emotional or behavioral issues. Can The Buckeye Ranch help?

Yes, we have a team of skilled professionals to help manage your child’s psychiatric medications while they receive counseling services with us. They can begin receiving this service once they are linked with their ongoing clinician for therapy. We are unable to take referrals for families that only want medication management for their child and are not interested in receiving any other therapeutic services.
