The Bonner Academy

Mental Health Educational Programming

The Bonner Academy at The Buckeye Ranch is a non-public charter school that provides integrated mental health and educational programming for students with mental health symptoms that affect their ability to function in their assigned school setting, home setting, and community.

Therapeutic Support for Young People

The Bonner Academy program focuses on both behavioral and academic goals, building upon students’ existing strengths. To reduce barriers to academic learning, students learn to manage symptoms and increase their level of functioning and stability so that they may return to their home school district.

The program provides 24-hour, on-call crisis services to support the students after hours. Students can also receive transition services as they return to their home school district so that they maintain their newly acquired skills.

Educational Activities

As a private, non-public charter school, our elementary educational curriculum meets the Ohio Department of Education standards. The program maintains a 1:12 teacher-to-student ratio. Each student has an educational plan that identifies areas that require remediation, as well as areas of competence. Upon admission, testing establishes baseline data on basic competency in the areas of math, spelling, and reading; post-testing occurs at discharge. The educational staff maintains contact with each student’s home district. Title 1 tutoring is offered to youth who are enrolled from the Columbus City School District.

Elementary Students

Students attend a six-hour program day with instruction provided in group and individualized formats. Individual, group, and family therapy are also provided throughout the school day. Due to the high acuity of student behaviors, we provide 24-hour crisis services to support families and youth in managing mental health symptoms and behaviors.

Elementary Counseling
We offer individual and family counseling at the elementary level, with crisis counseling also available in response to behavioral incidents. Group interventions such as adventure therapy, Zones of Regulation, coping/problem-solving, and interpersonal relationship skill building are provided for social skill development, anger management, and decision-making.

Middle and High School Students

Our Upper School program integrates education and intensive mental health treatment for middle and high school students and their families to reduce barriers to learning and education. We provide mental health treatment to reduce symptoms of mental health and advance academically. Students receive 15 hours of individual and group therapy each week.

Middle & High Counseling

Individual and family counseling occurs. Crisis counseling is also provided when behavioral incidents occur. Coping/problem-solving and interpersonal relationship skills are provided through group interventions so students can better develop their social skills, and the program also offers anger management and drug and alcohol awareness education.

Summer School

The summer program bridges learning and therapeutic gains from one academic year to the next with group and adventure therapies.
