Behavioral Health Respite

helping families gain the support they need

With limited respite options, many families and caregivers of youth with behavioral health challenges can become overwhelmed and burned out, often feeling disconnected from their communities. But even a few hours of support can make a world of difference.

The Buckeye Ranch’s Behavioral Health Respite program provides short-term relief for caregivers of youth with moderate mental and behavioral health needs, while offering youth safe, structured, and supportive experiences with trained staff. This helps prevent disruptions in care and improve outcomes for youth and families.

why behavioral health respite matters

Being a caregiver to a youth with complex emotional and behavioral needs can be stressful, especially when there are limited resources and supports available. Until recently, there were not many options for caregivers in Ohio.

Behavioral Health Respite is an important preventative strategy that helps reduce caregiver stress, improves family cohesion, supports youth development, and prevents costly out-of-home placements. This support can improve family relationships and increase the ability to care for youth in the home.

Behavioral Health Respite can help:

  • Prevent caregiver burnout
  • Strengthen family stability
  • Support youth in remaining safely at home
  • Reduce the risk of crisis escalation
  • Provide structured supervision and skill-building opportunities
  • Promote placement prevention and stabilization

frequently asked questions

How many respite days do I have, and how many are left?

Each youth gets up to 60 days of Behavioral Health Respite care each year. If you use your 60 days, your care coordinator can request more time.

Your care coordinator has the most accurate details of how many days you have and how many you have used. If more than one agency is helping with respite care, we will coordinate with each to make sure you do not exceed your available days.

If you have questions about your days, contact your care coordinator or OhioRISE.

Can I set up respite on a regular schedule?

Yes. After the first visit, our team will talk with you and help set up a schedule that works for your family. Overnight respite care can also be scheduled on a regular basis, but it must be set up through your care coordinator.

What is the difference between hourly respite and overnight respite?

Hourly respite is help for part of the day, for example a few hours. Overnight respite care includes staying overnight. Overnight respite care takes place in The Buckeye Ranch’s foster care homes and in other approved locations.

Does the respite caregiver have to be with The Buckeye Ranch, or can it be through another foster care agency?

The caregiver can be through another agency. However, our team cannot arrange respite with caregivers outside of The Buckeye Ranch. Your care coordinator will need to work directly with that agency.

Can respite happen in my home?

The Buckeye Ranch primarily provides respite services at our locations, within the community, and in The Buckeye Ranch’s foster care homes. We understand every family’s situation is unique, and we are open to discussing individual circumstances to explore what options may be available.

Can we use both hourly respite and overnight respite?

Yes. Please be aware that one overnight stay counts as two service days.
